FINED FOR HIGH-NICOTINE CIGARETTES

Jun 26, 2007 -- BUKIT MERTAJAM: A local cigarette manufacturer was slapped with a RM6,000 fine yesterday for exceeding the permissible amount of nicotine and tar in cigarettes.
Magistrate Raja Shahril Anuar Raja Baniaman also fined Zen Vista Enterprise owner Goh Kim Heong RM3,000 for printing a misleading label on the cigarette packets.
Goh, whose company manufactures the Promax brand of cigarettes, admitted committing both offences.
The first offence involved exceeding the 1.5mg nicotine and 20mg tar content allowed for each cigarette under Health Ministry regulations.
Ideris Mohamad, from the state Health Department, prosecuted.
According to the facts of the case, three enforcement officers visited the company’s premises in Jalan Chin off Jalan Kulim, Bukit Mertajam, on Dec 6 last year.
They bought three cartons of Promax Menthol cigarettes for RM109.50.
The cigarettes were then sent to the National Health Laboratory in Sungai Buloh, Selangor, for analysis.
On Jan 8, the officers received a report from the laboratory confirming their suspicions.
Ideris said yesterday’s judgment should serve as a lesson to cigarette manufacturers to abide by ministry regulations.
