CIGARETTE TAX HIKE URGED

Jan 16, 2007 -- MANITOWOC - Members of the county's Tobacco Control Coalition said Tuesday an increase in Wisconsin's excise tax rate on cigarettes would discourage consumption.
County Health Nurse Manager Amy Wergin told area legislators studies in Wisconsin and other states show an in increase in the cost of cigarettes "causes fewer people to start and more to quit."
The coalition urged passage of proposed legislation calling for a $1 hike to $1.77 per pack.
The coalition discussed tobacco-related issues with State Reps. Frank Lasee and Bob Ziegelbauer, and State Sen. Joe Leibham.
Wergin said reducing the toll of cigarettes is a three-pronged approach: restricting access to youth, increased use of cessation progtrams by smokers, and passage of clean indoor air legislation.
